Another year has passed filled with tons of growth and changes! We are quickly approaching DYRK1A awareness day (8/21). Wyatt became a big brother, and has taken to his new role even better than we had anticipated! He is flourishing in his swimming lessons, and has such a great bond with his instructor! He is also really starting to find his voice. He got a microphone that he loves and ever since he is full of new sounds and confidence! We love seeing each and every new development and especially love that as he gets older he truly is just becoming one of the boys with his older brothers!
DYRK1A is classified as a rare disease. As of now, there are just over 800 (100 gain this year!) people world-wide who have been diagnosed with the condition. In the competition for research dollars, rare diseases rarely win much. We will be joining the Run a K for DYRK1A fundraiser that concludes August 21st. There is still so much to learn about DYRK1A, as it hasn't even been known for a decade yet. This fundraiser is to bring awareness of this rare syndrome and to help raise money for research!! If you’re curious about DYRK1A, a good source of information is the DYRK1A Syndrome International Association, which can be found at www.DYRK1A.org.

Awareness is everything. I have yet to tell someone about Wyatt’s syndrome and not have to follow it up with an explanation of what that is. I will continue to educate so maybe one day, when I tell someone about Wyatt and the fact that he has DYRK1A, the response I get is "I've heard of that before." I can't wait for that day!
